Battenfelds is more than just a tree farm, it's an experience! We come here every year on the day after Thanksgiving to get our Christmas tree and tailgate; it's a family tradition. Lots of variety in the Christmas trees that are available but they are not cheap (this year they were $100). During the winter season they have horse-drawn carriage rides and a Santa for the kids. The gift shop has lots of gifts and trinkets for the holiday season and accepts cash or card. There are port-a-pottys to use if you're there for a while and a concession stand to get some hot food. Check on their website or on Facebook for their availability, as they close up shop after the majority of the trees sell each year.

Every December, we make the drive up to Red Hook for the one tradition that never gets old: cutting our Christmas tree at Battenfield Tree Farm. I’ve been going there my whole life (first in the backseat with my siblings, now riding shotgun and still just as excited), and somehow it feels exactly the same and brand-new every single year. You pull onto the long dirt road and the Hudson Valley opens up around you. Row after perfect row of Fraser firs, Canaan firs, concolors, and blue spruce stretch across the rolling hills. The Battenfield family has been growing trees here for over sixty years, and it shows; every tree is healthy, perfectly shaped, and so fragrant you can smell Christmas before you even get out of the car. The atmosphere speaks for itself. Kids are racing between the rows with little saws, couples are laughing as they debate height versus width, and the staff (some of whom I’ve known since I was in footie pajamas) greet everyone like old friends. There’s hot cider by the bonfire, Christmas music drifting through the air, and nothing but smiles from customers and employees alike. We still do it the old-fashioned way: bundle up, wander the fields until we find “the one,” argue good-naturedly about whether it’ll fit through the front door, then take turns sawing it down while someone sings “O Christmas Tree” off-key. The crew shakes it out, bales it, ties it on the car, and waves us off with a genuine “See you next year!”
